On Windows Vista when you map a drive under your admin account you will find that your mapped drive is not available after you switch to your full token via a RunAs or Consent dialog. This is by design because there are actually two tokens in play here. What happens is the LSA recognized that you are admin at logon and creates two logons. The first with a "filtered" token or non-admin which is used to render your desktop and the other containing your full token to be available after consent dialogs.

Because there are two separate logons there are separate logon ID's. When network shares are mapped they are linked to the current logon session for the current process token. Meaning you don't have access to the network drive from the alternate logon. This can come into play with logon scripts and a number of other areas where you may require access to a network share from both tokens.

If you set the following key it will change how SMB shares are mapped. They will be mapped to a token, which means that LSA will check to see if there is a linked token associated with the user session and add the network share to that location as well. Basically all of this means that after setting this drives will be accessible from both tokens no matter which they are mapped under.

Ok, so I've had UMA for the past three years or so (since the 8320 came out), and I've been having problems where UMA wouldn't connect. In wi-fi diagnostics, I would see that I had an IP address via DHCP, but in the UMA section, it would show an ISP or DNS error, and would show for the "serving UNC address" either n40.w79.t-mobileuncs.com or "punc.t-mobileuncs.com". I did some research and testing and found that when I was getting this error, I wasn't able to resolve this name through any of several upstream nameservers, including my ISP's (comcast), Google's recursive nameservers, 4.2.2.(1-4), etc. They all reported server fail. When I tried using OpenDNS's nameservers of 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220, I was able to resolve the n40.w79 name again. Yay!

A little research found that ultradns is handling the domain "t-mobileuncs.com", but "punc.t-mobileuncs.com" appears to not resolve properly even if you point directly at the ultradns servers, despite it being the default name that will be used if the initial name pushed fails to resolve. Now, the name "n40.w79" has something to do with a parameter that is apparently pushed by t-mobile, and related to the tower you are connecting to and the supporting equipment, so it shows as a location not all that far from me if you map it out by North 40 degrees, West 79 degrees.

Anyway, it appears that for some reason, different DNS configurations make a huge difference with how reliable your UMA connections are, and with the DNS servers listed above, so far it has been solid as a rock for me. I have been having problems with this for a while, and saw others with problems on UMA, so I figured that this would be good information to post.

Win 7 Administrative Shares

Windows 7 still creates the administrative shares on install, but you can't use them out of the box. First of all, you need to have File and Printer Sharing enabled. And the way to do that has once again been changed:

Open the control panel.
Go to Network and Internet.
Go to Network and Sharing Center.
In the left column, click on Change advanced sharing settings.
There are two profiles. You probably don't want this on when you're on a public network so open Home or Work.
Under the header File and Printer sharing, select the Turn on... option.

And now your administrative shares still don't work You've just completed step 1 which implies there's at least a step 2 and here it is: you also need to change the registry.

Click on the orb (= the round button with the Windows logo in the taskbar) and type regedit in the search box.
Open the registry editor.
Navigate all the way toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.
Right-click in the pane on the right side and add a new DWORD (32-bit).
Give the new setting the name LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy.
Double click on that setting and give it a value of 1.

It's probably wise to reboot after doing this, although it might not be needed. I'm not sure if it works straight away because I rebooted without trying.

Anyways, if you're lucky you will be able to access administrative shares after performing these steps. If you're unlucky, like me, doing all these things appears to have zero effect at all. Once again don't panick, because there's another hint/tip/solution coming your way.

Somewhere at some point during the installation or configuration of Windows 7, you will be asked to do something with a thing called Homegroup. It's some weird new sharing tool that looks OK but isn't quite what you're used to. Once you have enabled that feature, you won't be able to use the administrative shares. So the tip is: disable the homegroup feature.

Open the control panel.
Go to Network and Internet.
Go to HomeGroup.
Click on the blue link Leave the homegroup.

To use the command line hacks, you might need to run them from another server if your local operating system doesn't include the commands. You will also need to make sure that you are logged onto that server with an administrative account. The easiest way to do that is just map a drive (you don't have to use a drive letter unless you choose to)

( Note : restore point 9 assumed for clarity of the content, you have to go to the last restore point folder as described in the previous lines) Now according to the error message we have to copy the appropriate file from the restore point folder.

NOTE: The appropriate command should be used according to the error message. But often times I do both to make sure they match each other.

If the file "system" is corrupted

Type: copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system

Then click enter

If the file "software" is corrupted

Type: copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software

Then click enter

Type: Exit

Then click enter to restart computer and boot to the hard drive normally.

If this does not work, then you should try an earlier restore point. Normally 2 or 3 more restore points back. If that does not work your drive may be corrupt. At this point you will have a couple of different options.

1: You can copy your drive to a new drive and then try again. Make sure the software you use copies the restore folder with the rest of the windows system. Some do not move the system restore folder over to save time and space, but you can manually tell the program to move the restore folder. I use Casper XP, and it has the option to move the restore folder.

NOTE: Only do step 2 if the above has failed. Step 2 will remove all system restore points from your system and as far as I can tell they will be gone forever unless you have a copy of your hard drive. Also this should remove all MS updates and service packs and you will have to do your windows updates over again.

2: Another is to start the system from the cd as described previously and then, instead of loading the command prompt by clicking "R" at the first recovery prompt, you tell it to install windows and after you click the F8 key to agree to the End User License, you then will be given a chance to recover a previous version of windows (if the installation software does not recognize a previous version of windows !!!"STOP"!!!, or you will loose everything on the drive). Carefully follow through that repair setup wizard and that may also fix your problem.

Putting NTBACKUP back in Vista

Windows Vista includes a whole new backup tool called "Backup Status", which doesn't support BKF-backups made with NTBackup. "Backup Status" can at the same time only make backup of certain filetypes and folders.

Microsoft has released Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility, which allows Windows Vista to restore files saved in BKF-files.

If having a Windows XP system around, then it is possible to copy certain NTBackup files into Windows Vista, which will allow Windows Vista to backup and restore files with NTBackup. Create a new folder on Windows Vista ex. C:\Program Files\NTBackup and copy the following files from Windows XP to the folder:

C:Windows\System32\Ntbackup.exe
C:Windows\System32\Ntmsapi.dll
C:Windows\System32\Vssapi.dll
C:Windows\Help\Ntbackup.chm
C:Windows\Help\Ntbackup.hlp

Note to run the Restore Utility or NTBackup on Windows Vista, then one has to enable Removable Storage Management, or else one will get an NTSMAPI.dll error.

Open Control Panel and under "Programs and Features" click "Turn Windows Features on or off"

Reset Joomla Admin Password

You cannot recover the existing password, but you can reset it to a new password.
The passwords are stored using a one-way MD5 hash which prevents recovering the password.
But you can reset the password by editing the password field in the database.
Set the password to a known value and then you may log-in using that new password.

The password is stored in the MySQL database jos_users table password field. (change this for your table prefix if different)
Use a MySQL utility such as phpMyAdmin or MySQL Query Browser to edit this field.
Open the table, find your admin username, and then select that row for editing.
The password must be hashed, you cannot simply enter text into this field.

Set the password to a known value

Remember after you mail enable a public folder and choose what SMTP address it will have to set Anonymous user permissions.

Almost all problems with mail-enabled public folders are permissions issues. It is important to give the "Anonymous" user "Contributor" rights in order to actually receive mail in such a folder.

To check and change rights open Exchange System Manager and navigate to Administrative Groups > your administrative group > Servers > your server > First Storage Group > Public Folder Store > Public Folders and the properties of your public folder. Then go to the "Permissions" tab.

If you are on the Sprint network all you need to do is download Sprint SmartView
and let it do the work for you. AFter you have installed the software (which says it's 37mb but after it was all said and done my PC says 57mb) all you gotta do is plug ur Blackberry in to the USB cable and the Sprint View Software will handle the rest. Lemme know if you have any Q's!!

06.12.08 NEW INFO UPDATE ******Good news for you Addicts with Sprint!!!! If you have an unlimited data plan for your Berry (ie. Simply Everything Plan), you can use these instructions to configure your Berry as a modem WITHOUT paying the additional $39.99 p/m for the Phone As Modem feature and WITHOUT incurring usage charges!!!! I tested this theory with another CB member who has the Simply Everything Plan & doesn't have the Phone As Modem feature. I checked the acct. throughout the bill cycle to make sure no usage charges were stacking up and there wasn't a single one!!!!

Now, the 2nd lil tid bit of info was sent to me by a CB member in Mexico with a few tweaks to the set up instructions for other's in Mexico wanting to use their Berry's as Modems. So, here ya go!!!!......

Why pay for internet service for your Blackberry & for your home PC? Your Blackberry's gotcha covered, it can do both. All you have to to do is set up yoru computer to recognize your Blackberry as a modem. And, of course, you also have to have an appropriate internet feature on your Blackberry from your carrier. These instructions were created for PC's running XP, but I know for a fact that this will also get the job done with Visa, Vista Premium, & Win 2000. The steps taken to get to the appropriate windows may differ a bit, but the actual set up is the same in all. Here ya go, hope this helps.!!

Verify that you have the Desktop Manager version 4.2 and the software bundle that came with the handheld installed on your computer.

Query the modem, using the modems properties:

1 Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2 Double-click on Phone and modem options.
3 Click on the Modems tab.
4 Left-click on the modem installed above. (Standard Modem or Standard Modem over Bluetooth)
5 Click Properties.
6 Click the Diagnostics tab.

18 Confirm that the BlackBerry Desktop Manager is running.
*IMPORTANT: BlackBerry Desktop Manager must be running, or error 692 will appear during the dial up attempt. (i have 1 connection set for the standard modem, usb cable, & 1 connection set for the standard modem over bluetooth and have no problems getting a connection without connecting to desktop manager)
19 Open the web browser and navigate to any website to test the connection.

If the laptop/PC connects but Internet Explorer does not, follow these steps:

1 From Internet Explorer, click Tools, then Internet Options....
2 Click the Connections tab.
3 From Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings, select T-Mobile.
4 Click Set Default.
5 Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present.
6 Click OK.
7 Click OK again.

Problem: When trying to re-install an operating system that constantly intializes, Desktop Manager will not recognize the device.

Solution: The following walkthough!

Thank you to Pentace for this excellent walkthough:

FYI this will work for any handheld that constantly initializes.. aka the hourglass of doom.

1. Install the desktop software.
2. Install the handheld software. (If it is a non Vendor software.. exp. T-Mobile. search and delete the "vendor.xml" file.)
3. Pull the battery out of your device.
4. With the battery out connect the device to the computer.
5. Go to Options and select "connection settings"
6. Select USB PIN this may take a few moments since there is no battery in the device. you might even have to select detect device in some rare cases.
7. Select the application loader icon.
8. Select all software you want installed.
9. Proceed to the end portion untill you see the "Finish" button.
10. Very IMPORTANT. do not hit the finish button, instead select the ADVANCED button.
11. Make sure both boxes are checked.
12. Proceed until it asks you if you want to automatically back up and restore. Select DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY BACK UP MY HANDHELD.
13. Once the process starts. take care not to bump out the cord and re-insert the battery. Again on some rare occasions you might have to wait until it finishes saying connect to insert the battery.

THIS MAY FAIL THE FIRST OR SECOND TIME DONT WORRY JUST KEEP TRYING.

If you do not get it by the 3rd time.. download the Blackberry java developers kit and install it. once installed find the javaloader.exe file and move it into the c:\ directory

Once it is under the c:\, go to start then run and type. cmd.exe

After the command prompt apears type in "c:\javaloader -usb wipe" to wipe the handheld

*The reason I have highlighted Step 13 is that this is very important to do BEFORE the DM tries to re-start your device because it WILL NOT re-intialize your device IF THE BATTERY IS NOT IN YOUR DEVICE.
