can't install printers

This steps do work well for me.

Do them at your own risk.

Backup registry before you do anything!!!!

Stop "Print Spooler" service first

Then base on your platform delete all keys below the version-3
for 32 bit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3

for 64 bit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows x64\Drivers\Version-3

go to the folder "3"
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3
rename it to "3.old"

Start the "Print Spooler" again and install your printers

Switched HDMI cables on my HP Pavillion 23xi monitor and got the "Check Video Cable" message.  Opened up the Screen Resolution settings in Windows and clicked 'Detect' next to the visual display of the monitors.  Error fixed, all is well.

Google Maps URL

This is current accepted way to link to a specific lat lon (rather than search for the nearest object).

http://maps.google.com/maps?z=12&t=m&q=loc:38.9419+-78.3020
  • z is the zoom level (1-20)
  • t is the map type ("m" map, "k" satellite, "h" hybrid, "p" terrain, "e" GoogleEarth)
  • q is the search query, if it is prefixed by loc: then google assumes it is a lat lon separated by a+

Hostgator Web Hosting Review

I have (not for much longer) a Hostgator reseller account.  I've now transitioned the last of 30+ sites away from them.  Reasons? They were purchased by a large conglomerate, moved datacenters and ever since the performance has been abysmal.  Night and day since the changes.  Need more proof? This is the response time graph for the last site I moved away from Hostgator.  Can you guess where on the graph it occurred?

Switching Windows 8 from AHCI to ATA/IDE or reverse

I was having Intel Rapid Storage Technology RST issues with a newly installed drive...did not need performance so switched BIOS to RAID auto/ ATA to eliminate the Intel RAID controller usage

  • Run msconfig (right click far left bottom corner of desktop then left click run, type msconfig).
  • Click boot tab, mark safe boot, restart, change to AHCI in BIOS, boot, Windows boots in safe mode.
  • Run msconfig again, boot tab unmark safe boot, restart PC.

owncloud folder cfg

Re: Shared folders not downloaded via Sync client?

by Ionican » Tue Nov 27, 2012 1:44 pm

ok - after scouring the developer boards I found this courtesy of ForestMountain (http://bugs.owncloud.org/thebuggenie/owncloud/issues/oc-755):

"I have found that you can change this

Linux (Fedora 16): /home/<username>/.local/share/data/ownCloud/folders/ownCloud

Windows7: c:\users\<username>\App Data\Local\ownCloud\folders\ownCloud

Edit the ownCloud file with a normal texteditor. Writing targetPath=/ will reflect the localpath"

delete large number of files quickly

use tyhe command line and:

windows 7 webdav

Connecting Windows 7 to a WebDAV location requires the user to change a simple setting in the Windows Registry. For example, when connecting an ownCloud WebDAV, it simply isn't as straight forward as using a Linux box

The first thing that you need to do is locate your ownCloud or other WebDAV location. The WebDAV location in ownCloud is found by clicking the gear icon on the lower-left of the page and then Personal. Keep that address handy. Next, open up the Windows Registry with the Run command  - Windows + R then type in regedit.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters\BasicAuthLevel

Change the BasicAuthLevel from 1 to 2. Close the Registry and open up the Services window (Windows + R thenservices.msc). Navigate to the WebClient service and Restart.

Next, open up Windows Explorer (not the web browser) and Map Network Drive. Input the WebDAV address and Login with different credentials. When the dialog pops up, enter your username and password for the WebDAV location. You're done!

run chkdsk on Server 2008 Backup drive

type in the following at an elevated Command Prompt:

mountvol

This will return the command syntax for the mountvol command, followed by the existing volumes and their mount points. We're interested in the Volume GUID immediately above this line:

*** NO MOUNT POINTS ***

It will look something like this:

\\?\Volume{12345678-1234-5678-9abc-123456789abc}\

We now take this Volume GUID minus the trailing slash and feed it to chkdsk, like this:

chkdsk /f \\?\Volume{12345678-1234-5678-9abc-123456789abc}

(remember...no trailing slash)

How do I restart the Remote Desktop Service on a Server 2003 system without rebooting the system?

The Terminal Services service is run as a SVCHost.exe process. The first step in stopping it requires identifying the correct process. On your Windows 2003 Server, open up a command prompt. At the prompt, type:
tasklist /svc

Scroll through the output until you find
svchost.exe XXXX TermServices
where XXXX is the process id.

At the same prompt, type
taskkill /PID XXXX /F
where XXXX is the process id you got from the previous command.

Type:
services.msc
and hit enter. Then type Exit and hit enter. The command prompt will close and the services window will open. Scroll through the list of services until you find Terminal Services. Right click on the service and select Start from the popup menu.

enable Windows 8 admin shares

you'll need to add this registry key...

Open regedit, and drill down to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Under this key you will need to create a new DWORD value called:

LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy

Office Pro 2003 - Insert Original installation Disk - can't find SKU111.cab

Old post, but had to wade through a bunch of Google to find it...Thank you Rajalakshmi for solving an age old problem

original post here:  http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-4751-sku011-cab

To solve this problem
Solution below:

Regedit (start menu -> run -> type regedit)

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Office -> 11.0 -> Delivery

There should be only 1 directory under Delivery, which is your DownloadCode (mine was 90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9). Select that directory. On the right side of the screen, right-click on CDCache. Change the value to 0.

windows 2008 r2 - I/O error backing up to external drive

Basically there are two things that could be causing your backup to fail if it is a removable HD.  I am going to save you the trouble of reading this whole thread and catch you up.

1.     Your removable HD has bloatware (crapware, extra software, custom bios, etc etc…) that prevents windows from seeing it for what it should be (a removable HD). When you plugged your disk in did you also get a new CDROM drive also?  Did you install some special software in order to get to the disk?  Encryption software maybe?  Your disk is not going to work.  Stop reading any further and return it.  Don't feel bad.  Chances are you didn't know it was going to be that way and the manufacturer did a poor job of telling you about it before you purchased it. Return your drive and go to this site where there is a nice list developing that tracks disks that have been tested:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1780.aspx

2.     Your disk has more than 512 bytes per physical sector.  If it new and large (like 1TB or more) it probably has 4096 bytes per physical sector.  The windows backup software was designed to work with disks that have 512 bytes per physical sector.  Again, don't feel bad about getting the wrong disk.  I did a quick check of about 10 disks online and couldn't find a single one where the manufacturer listed the bytes per physical sector in the specs anywhere.  Also, until you have this problem, you will probably never know about the 512 byte design issue.

Anyhow, now that you do know about it, you can try to fix it using the Microsoft hotfix here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018 which adds support for 4096 byte disks to server 2008 and 2008 R2 (and any SBS versions based on them).  Once the hotfix is applied and you reboot, try assigning the removable HD a drive letter and formatting it.   Once that is done you can check to see if the disk is going to work by using fsutil.  Here is an example showing the command line and the result:

C:\Users\administrator>fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo f:
NTFS Volume Serial Number :       0x2ebc529bbc525d81
Version :                         3.1
Number Sectors :                  0x000000000e8b4eff
Total Clusters :                  0x000000000e8b4eff
Free Clusters  :                  0x000000000e8aa566
Total Reserved :                  0x0000000000000000
Bytes Per Sector  :               4096
Bytes Per Physical Sector :       <Not Supported>
Bytes Per Cluster :               4096
Bytes Per FileRecord Segment    : 4096
Clusters Per FileRecord Segment : 1
Mft Valid Data Length :           0x0000000000100000
Mft Start Lcn  :                  0x00000000000c0000
Mft2 Start Lcn :                  0x0000000000000002
Mft Zone Start :                  0x00000000000c0000
Mft Zone End   :                  0x00000000000cc820
RM Identifier:        42643033-B240-11E0-9765-3C4A92E16BD6

You see where it says "Bytes Per Physical Sector:" and the result was "<Not Supported>"?  That means this disk will not work with the backup even though the hotfix is installed.  Some disks don't report their bytes per physical sector correctly and therefore won't work.   If you get one that does report 512 or 4096 you should be OK.

Btw, if you do find one that works, be kind and add it to the list of drives here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1780.aspx with a comment about your test setup and results.
